As the demand for hosted and cloud computing solutions
continue to increase so does the demand for providers who can provide
data center space. Each week we learn of a newly constructed data
center or expansion in particular for the data center outsourcing
markets. Recently Rackspace Hosting announced that they will be
expanding their data center footprint in the Chicago market to match
the demand.
Rackspace will be leasing over 35,000 square feet from DuPont Fabros
Technology, a developer, owner and operator of wholesale data centers.
DuPont Fabros Technology currently operates nearly 1.5 million square
feet of data center space in the Virginia market alone with other
properties reaching into Illinois and a development site in New
Jersey.
According to Rackspace, the expansion is to help balance the demand
in particular for its cloud business offerings. Rackspace believes
that this lease with DuPont Fabros will enable it to serve customer
demand more quickly and cost effectively than if Rackspace built
its own facility. Additionally, because the lease provides for Rackspace
to grow into the space over time, the company is better able to
match its expenses to revenue as driven by customer demand. The
trend to outsource data center space is growing in particular because
of the same reasons why Rackspace has decided to outsource the space
from someone else.
