Tips to Manage Server Power Utilization

Nowadays the green wave is everywhere and this is for a good reason –energy prices are increasing and this shakes data center managers and urges them to find ways to achieve the same high results but with less power. This goal is not so hard to hit, provided you know why you are trying to make your servers use less power and how to do it.

Why should I Try to Make My Servers Use less Power?
Data centers are among the largest consumers of energy and within them reside servers. These servers are a large contributor to energy consumed in a data center along with the cooling infrastructure. According to research data, as quoted in the Data Center Efficiency Experts In Demand article published in the online edition of the Data Center Journal on June 13 2008, "Power usage of datacenter centers (average kW use per rack) jumped 12% in 2008 over 2007" and "40% of the data center's overall power consumption is used by servers."
Also, as the Uptime Institute reports, data center energy use doubled between 2000 and 2006 and by 2012, it's expected to double again.

With increased consumption and skyrocketing energy prices the result is an expensive energy bill. Many data center owners are capable of keeping up with the bills without cutting other expenses. To them we say where is your sense of being a good neighbor to the environment? To everyone else who must cut back, your servers is a good starting point. This is not so difficult to achieve and once you implement the right measures, you will reduce your energy bill substantially without any negative effects on data center performance.
