Is it all marketing hype or is there legitimacy to
the number of data centers that are attaining LEED certification
for their facilities? It's a little of both. Green IT or energy
efficiency in IT is in vogue and from what we can interpret the
reasons initially was to offer cost saving solutions to a facility
that is typically known as an energy hog. An energy efficient data
center is an oxymoron and if you can find ways to save costs then
it is a win-win for the company and environment.
The motives are changing beyond just saving a buck,
but preparing for the future. Currently LEED is developing a LEED
certification specifically for data centers and at the moment we
cannot tell if this program will be more or less stringent. It is
also unknown if those who have applied for LEED based on the current
standards would automatically be grandfathered in or if they would
need to reapply.
The future is also unclear on if a US energy tax credit
program will be started and how it will be governed. Will the US
Green Building Council's LEED program or programs that have and
will be developed by the US Department of Energy be key contributors
to the energy tax credit program? At the moment it is unclear.
