Gone are the days when government services were more
symbolic of bureaucratic procedures and lesser efficiency as compared
to private organizations. The systems of government are getting
ever more dependent on computers and IT infrastructure and data
centers have come to play increasingly important role in the scheme
of things.
The good thing about technology is that it increases
efficiency but the bad thing about it is that it needs constant
updating and upgrading. In fact this is more true of systems involving
IT where technology changes at a very fast pace and the normal life
span of the equipment and related paraphernalia is just around 3-5
years.
Combined with the fact that the economy is not going
through a very smooth phase, it is certainly very difficult for
the federal departments in the United States to keep pace with this
fast upgrading requirements. Combined with pressures of a recessionary
economy and directives to cut costs and keep budgets under control,
it is sometimes like walking on the sword’s edge.
It is so because despite the recession or any other
factor, the use of IT related services is certainly on the rise.
This in turn means that people would flock ever more to the e-services
provided by the government and the amount of data and storage space
required to handle this data would certainly keep rising.
