Data centers are big business. The cost to design
and build a data center can range within $400 to $1000+ per square
foot. These figures are based on industry design/ construction averages.
The price range to design and build a data center is typically based
on the required availability. For instance if you require your data
center to be available 99.99% of the time your data center cost
will be on the higher side of the scale; the higher the availability
the higher the cost.
Over the years, figures such as these have provided
great success for established data center or mission critical facility
design and construction firms. These same figures have also generated
more design and construction players to the industry.
An increase in service providers typically provides
competition and improved pricing for end users. Buyers beware. A
low figure should not replace experience when selecting a data center
design or build firm. A mistake made during design or construction
can cause your data center extended downtime. Downtime for a data
center can costs millions of dollars per minute. This is one step
in your design and construction process that you should not skimp
on.
