When it comes to your personal online life (if such
a thing can be said to be “personal”), data centers may know almost
everything about you—and they can tell all to anyone who wants to
know. That is, assuming your information is not kept private, and
assuming the security of the data centers that hold it remains intact.
The aggregate amount of information that data centers
store is staggering, and many Internet users may find that the amount
of information that data centers store about their online activities
is a bit disturbing. Although a recorded history of online activity
may be beneficial for businesses and other entities, such a history
may not be beneficial for certain users who, for example, posted
information or photographs on Facebook before they considered the
ramifications of their actions. Even a single comment can come back
to haunt users.
