Dateline : October 18, 2007 Bangkok

October 10, 2008 - Cheval group of
companies recently announced the hosting of the first ever Cheval
Open Source Search as a challenge for all employees to involve themselves
in using OpenOffice. The competition helps promote the use of open
source software to Cheval employees in all three of our facilities.
The competition is not only a chance to show expertise in using
the software, but also illustrates the potential of developing and
contributing to the very worthwhile subject of Free and Open Source
Software.
The idea is to learn by working together on projects
such as OpenOffice.org whose license allows free collaboration across
borders and between organizations.
The competition would attract unique skills learned
from using OpenOffice and is divided into 3 categories:
- Spreadsheet calculations through the use of Open Source Office
Calc
- Documents and word processing through the use of Open Source
Office Writer
- Graphics designers and retouching through Open Source Office
Gimp
The contest will run through November 30. 2007 and
cash prizes awarded will total approximately 150,000 Baht or US$
4,500.
OpenOffice.org is both an open-source project and product. It is
free. As one of the leading
open-source projects, OpenOffice.org combines the worldwide efforts
of developers and
end users to produce a complete office productivity suite that runs
on all major platforms and
in over 40 languages while being compatible with Microsoft Office.
Currently, Cheval workstations primarily have OpenOffice.org
products installed and that the company is planning activities with
knowledge-based publications such as OpenSource2Day magazine.
